Get closer to Britain's rarest breeds!

Our rare breeds are the main attraction of the farm as we try and preserve them for future generations. At Cholderton Charlie's you don't just see the animals but you have the opportunity to touch and feed them too. Some of our breeds include the famous Golden Gurnsey Goats, the bagot goats the racing Saddleback Pigs and the beautiful Eriskay pony and rare breeds of rabbit and chicken.

One of our rarest breeds is the Bagot Goat. It has known to exist since the 1380's and it got its name from the Bagot family of Staffordshire who owned the earliest known heard, which roamed wild in Bagot’s Park. The Bagot goat is a medium sized breed, with long hair and horns. It is typically a nervous breed. Ideally a well bred Bagot goat should be entirely black from nose to shoulder, and entirely white thereafter, however this does not always breed true.

Bagot numbers have fluctuated for a variety of reasons in the past. However, it is now on the RBST list.

Another of our rarest breeds is the Eriskay Pony. We have 4 here at Cholderton, the youngest was born in June and is called Solstice. The Eriskay Pony originated from the Western Isles of Scotland and was used as a working horse. They are usually born brown or black and turn grey as they mature. They are sensible and intelligent. The Eriskay pony is more rare than the Giant Panda!

They are classed as critical by the RBST (Rare Breeds Survival Trust).
